This site is located in one corner of a high-density housing area in Setagaya, Tokyo. It is surrounded by buildings except on the west side, so the views from this building are not as good as we would like.
For such conditions, rather than fostering relations with neighbors, we decided to create a relationship between each space on the site and to use a courtyard plan. There has been a parking lot on the west side for a long time, leading us to believe that it will continue to be there into the foreseeable future, so we opened the building to the west to allow light and added a courtyard.
Although it is a narrow site, by inserting a courtyard, each space in the house will have a relation through the courtyard, providing lighting and ventilation.
Moreover, we created a slope on the roof to the south to take light from this direction easily. The scene from the small window in the loft space also became more open and interesting because of this roof. A tree is planted in the courtyard so that the owner can enjoy it in the course of daily life.
The courtyard is a symbolic space in this building. It maintains comfortable distances to each space while connecting visually. The connection makes the building one, and the distance provides relaxed communication to the residents.
