This two-family house is planned on a site in a relatively spacious environment in the suburbs.
We started the project based on the client's request that a modern but Japanese-inspired design be
adopted, and a spacious flow planning be made with consideration for the parent household.
A unique ramp is provided from the parking lot for the parent household to allow approach to the
residence without using stairs.
The first floor is planned to make the housekeeping and main flow lines as short and simple as
possible.
To respect the existing spacious garden to the utmost, this plan was made to open up the living
space toward it, allowing plenty of light to enter the interior.
The terrace overlooking the garden, which is connected to the living room, has a deep eave to cut
the summer sunlight as much as
possible and to interrupt line of sight from the second floor of the neighboring property.
This terrace is also connected to the parents’ bedroom so that they can enjoy basking in the sun
during the seasons when the weather is pleasant.
The second floor is a simple layout plan, as requested, because it consists of a bedroom and a guest
room, which are private spaces.
The client preferred modern design as well as Japanese design, so while the overall design was
modern, we carefully incorporated Japanese elements such as eaves, shoji screens, nageshi
(horizontal piece of timber), shinkabe (wall with exposed timber pillars), and decorative beams into
the details to create a calm and relaxed house.
